Thành ngữ này được sử dụng để nói rằng làm gì quá vội vàng sẽ khó đạt kết quả, làm lãng phí thời gian, công sức, nguyên liệu… Ví dụ bạn hối thúc người sửa xe: “Sửa nhanh lên!” vì giờ đi làm của bạn quá trễ rồi. Nếu người thợ sửa ẩu sẽ khiến xe của bạn bị hỏng không bao lâu sau và rốt cuộc bạn vẫn đi làm muộn. “Đừng hối thúc – Haste makes waste”.

Dùng để bày tỏ sự ngạc nhiên khi bạn tình cờ (nhưng không mong đợi) gặp một ai đó ở một nơi xa, hoặc khi bạn đang nói chuyện với người khác và ngạc nhiên khám phá ra cả hai đều quen một người.

Câu thành ngữ này làm tôi liên tưởng đến cảnh trong phim Hàn Quốc: cô gái đi cùng người yêu mới và tình cờ gặp người yêu cũ. Một trong hai anh sẽ nói: “Đúng là trái đất tròn!” (It’s a small world!) Đây là tình huống không ai mong muốn.

Tạm dịch là: mưa như nước trút. Nguồn gốc của thành ngữ này bắt nguồn từ nước Anh. Khoảng thế kỉ thứ 17, người dân thường hay xả rác bừa bãi ở ngoài đường thay vì đưa nó đến bãi tập kết rác. Thành phố như một bãi rác khổng lồ. Có rất nhiều chó mèo đến kiếm ăn, cư ngụ và cả chết ở đó! Không một ai dọn bãi rác ấy. Đến một ngày, có một trận mưa lớn, lớn đến nỗi nó cuốn tất cả đi, cả rác và rất nhiều xác chết chó mèo. Đó là lí do vì sao mưa to ta thường nói: Raining cats and dogs.
